"Celebrity Endorsement Of Products"

Positive:

1. It helps to increase brand awareness, especially for small startups. In this way, they can reach wider audience, and set up positive association amongst people.
2. This certainly leads to differentiation of products from masses, and set up its uniqueness in terms of image and persona
3. Even important social causes could be spread out to public, one of the most successful social awareness campaign which was run in India, was of polio vaccination, where Amitabh Bachchan was hired as its brand ambassador and thus India became polio free on 13th jan,2011.this can be stated as an excellent example to promote social causes and spread awareness amongst public.
4. Undoubtedly, celebrity endorsement can turn out to be a powerful tool, in order to promote tourism and enhance national image of the country.
5. Even fundraising for various social causes could be promoted, as it certainly encourages more people to donate and get involved. Stating of an example, where many celebs came forward during Covid-19 and asked for its relief funds.

Negative

1. It can lead to high expenses, as celebrity endorsement can eat up a significant portion of the company’s budget. Small startups are unable to afford it, and many a times they do not even come to lime light and vanish from the stores.
2. Once you select a celebrity for your brand, it makes a deep-rooted connection, where the reputation of one is linked to another. And thus, if one gets involved in a scandal, or shows mis behavior, it can affect the company’s image too.
3. Many a times, the products which are being promoted by the celebrities are not even used by them, and have harmful impacts on the skin or health of the consumer. Such discrepancies should be taken care of, so that people do not waste their hard-earned money.
4. Many a times, the advertisements which are for beauty products, promote skin whitening standards, which certainly lead to low esteem issues among consumers.

Measures to be taken by Government:

1. Misleading information should be at bar, and thus The Ministry of consumer affairs in India, is responsible to avoid false claims and give reliable information.
2. Product liability law, ensures the quality and safety of products the company manufacture and sell. Even the companies which put harm caused due to product’s usage enables them to seek legal action against them.
3. The Department of Consumer Affairs has released a guideline, “Endorsement Know-hows!” which ensures that the advertisements do not mislead the audience and comply with the “Consumer Protection Act”. The language in which it is written is quite simple so that all people can understand it easily.
