Common GD Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

Group Discussion Preparation

Group Discussions (GDs) are a staple of campus recruitment and competitive exams.

While they may seem straightforward, many candidates lose crucial opportunities because of common, avoidable mistakes.

One frequent error is over-domination. Some participants confuse leadership with interruption, speaking excessively without giving others space. Recruiters see this as arrogance rather than confidence. True leadership is about facilitating balanced participation.

At the other extreme, some candidates remain silent spectators, speaking too little or waiting too long for the “perfect” chance. This creates the impression of lack of confidence or knowledge. Even a few crisp, relevant points are better than prolonged silence.

Another mistake is straying off-topic. In the heat of debate, participants sometimes drift into unrelated tangents. Staying aligned with the theme shows clarity of thought and maturity.

Finally, ignoring body language can weaken even strong content. Slouching, avoiding eye contact, or fidgeting undermines credibility. A confident posture, attentive listening, and courteous gestures reinforce positive impact.

Avoiding these pitfalls requires awareness, practice, and presence of mind. When you strike the right balance between content, clarity, and courtesy, a GD becomes less of a hurdle and more of an opportunity to shine.

INTRODUCTION
1. Good morning everyone, greetings of the day!
2. The topic of today’s discussion is “Global warming- causes, effects and solutions.”
3. One of the greatest threats of 21st century, is none other than – global warming. Global warming is heating up of earth due to presence of excessive amount of carbon dioxide and other green house emissions on the Earth leading to unpredictable natural disasters.
4. There are multiple causes, reasons of global warming and the major solutions can be discussed one by one.
5. So, now I would request my teammates to give their valuable suggestions and I open the house for discussion.

Causes of global warming:
1. Due to vast emission of green house gases, the temperature of earth is getting severely affected and raising with the passage of time.
2. Deforestation has been the biggest disaster, trees turn as the prime source in absorbing CO2 from the nature, but due to massive cutting of trees, there is less availability of trees and thus less source to absorb carbon dioxide i.e atmosphere traps more of sun’s heat.
3. Even the burning of fossil fuels for several needs such as transportation, has led to increase in share of greenhouse gases.
4. Increase in materialism has led to more production, which requires more energy and thus in return leading to the production of harmful gases; global warming.
5. The vehicles usage has increased at par, and thus paving way to excessive fossil fuel usage which is one of the prime factors of global warming.

Effects of Global warming:
1. Major difference can be witnessed in weather conditions, where winters are getting colder and summers are hotter. Even there has been an increase in natural disasters such as droughts, floods etc.
2. Due to unpredictable circumstances, many people and birds are forced to migrate to other areas.
3. Global warming has also resulted in melting of ice, which leads to increase in sea level. Also, more CO2 in water is affecting the marine life.
4. Even there has been increase in amount of pollutants in air, which is leading to widespread diseases in several people.

Solutions to global warming:
1. Planting more and more trees, can result in creating a balance of carbon dioxide in environment.
2. Prioritizing the usage of solar energy, wind energy as an alternative to burn fossil fuels, it can prevent further increase of greenhouse gases in atmosphere.
3. Sustainable and eco-friendly approach can definitely reverse global warming.

Conclusion:
1. On behalf of everyone, I would like to take the initiation to conclude the discussion
2. It was quite a healthy/fruitful/ discussion where all members exchanged their viewpoints.
3. Discuss some quotes/ viewpoints of your mates which you find quite good, try to mention the points which you have jotted down
4. Thankyou.
