1. Initially, they asked a few casual questions like where I stay, my GATE exam score, have applied to any IITs for M.Tech, etc. Then they moved to the technical
part.
2. They told me to write my four well-prepared subjects on the blackboard. I wrote - SOM (Strength of materials), TD (Thermodynamics), HT (Heat transfer) and
FM (Fluid Mechanics).
3. Draw engineering stress v/s engineering strain curve for ductile material. Now superimpose True stress v/s true strain curve. Now tell which stress is more at
ultimate stress point. Which stress strain is more accurate and why. Why we use engineering stress and engineering strain.
4. If you have two identical bars (same length and same cross-section area) in series and rigidly fixed between two rigid supports, one bar is made up of steel
and other one is copper alloy. If it is heated then, in which direction junction move. Which bar fails initially?
5. If you have a bar with load of 3P acting on one side and another side there is no force, what will be the stress? Now if we add a force of 5P on other side. Now
what will there be stress?
6. What did you learn about thermodynamics?
7. Tell me about zeroth law
8. Draw carnot cycle. Ok where we use the carnotcycle ?
9. In a container of cross-sectional area ‘A’, water is filled till height ‘h’, and there is a small hole of diameter ‘d’ at the bottom of the container. Find the time taken
to empty the tank.
10. Suppose a piston of weight ‘W’ is placed on the top, resting on the surface of the water, find the time taken to empty the tank.
11. What are the three modes of heat transfer?Which mode of heat transfer is the most efficient and why?
12. If there are two identical plates having the same temperature of 200°C kept in a room with one kept in a horizontally and other kept vertically, which will cool
faster?
13. If the same plate is dipped in water and oil, in two different cases, which one will cool faster?
14. There are two wooden plates one is horizontal and one is vertical. Which one will float on water and which will not?
